Piper's Lagoon

Wildflowers and Bird Observation

April 23, 2005

John MacKenzie

The weather turned out to be ideal for the 14 Nanoose Naturalists who visited Piper's Lagoon to view wild flowers and birds. Many of the wild flowers were at their peak and the Blue Camus were just beginning to burst out in flower.  The White Fawn Lillies had finished blooming, and the seed pods were evident. Interesting specimens of wild flowers included Chocolate Lily, Naked Broomrake, Spring Gold, Chickweed Monkey Flower, Larkspur, Blue-eyed Mary and Common Storksbill. Also, the woods were alive with Serviceberry and Bitter Cherry in flower.
Birds were not that abundant, but the group saw and heard a good variety. Some of the highlights included Marbled Murrelets, Orange-crowned and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Common Loon, Horned Grebe in breeding plumage, Bewick's Wren and a number of Bald Eagles in various habitats.
