Bonnell Creek

Nature Walk

April 23, 2009

Vicki Voros

Fourteen Club Members and 3 dogs joined the leader Vicki Voros for a nature hike in the local area. We drove up Summerset Road which is right off the Island Highway just south of the Arlington Pub.

We walked along a logging road for a short distance and then veered off onto a very pleasant trail through a forest and stopped to admire the falls on Bonnell Creek which are flowing well at this time of year. With several falls connected by pools, this site is well worth a visit.

The vegetation has not quite donned its spring green but we did see a few salmon berry flowers and some beautiful western trilliums. We made several stops to locate elusive birds showing off their spring songs but they proved rather shy of several pairs of binoculars.

A little broom removal was attempted - every little helps. Together with a garbage clean up around the parking spot, we did our bit for Earth Day just a day late!

There were several comments about the accessibility of the area and the suitability for easy walking and for those with dogs a very safe area. So it is recommended for members to do more exploring of the area in the future.

I hope everyone enjoyed the excursion and thank you all for coming.
