Meetings and Outings Schedule

September – December 2005

Monthly meetings are normally held at the Nanoose Library on the second Thursday of the month starting at 7:00 p.m. 

There will be two kinds of outings: (a) bird walks in Nanoose and (b) outings of a more general nature.  The observations gathered during the bird walks will be recorded in the Club's Checklist of Birds of Nanoose Bay.

(a) The meeting points and times for the Nanoose bird walks vary.  The meeting points generally are at the start of the walk, and the meeting times are adjusted to the season.  See the announcements below.  The walks are generally two hours in duration.  Please meet a few minutes early for sign-in.

(b) These outings usually start at the Nanoose Place parking lot at 9:30 a.m. Please meet  15 minutes early for sign-in and car pool arrangements.

Details will be added to the descriptions of the outings at a later time.

Nanoose Bird Walk in the Dolphin Lake area

Leader:  Al Kirkley (468-1621).  Meet in the parking lot at the end of Schooner Cove Drive.  The walk will start at 5:30 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 25 Outing Englishman River and Top Bridge Trail

Leader: Gordon Buckingham with the Englishman River Coalition.  Contact person: John MacKenzie (468-7329). Easy to moderate. The walk will go from the Parksville Industrial Park along the Englishman River to the Top Bridge Park and back.  Duration of the walk about two hours.  Learn more about the River as well as the natural history of the area. Leave from Nanoose Place at 9:30 a.m.

Thursday, Oct. 13 Meeting Traditional ecological knowledge of the Pacific Northwest Coast

Kim Recalma-Clutesi - Qualicum First Nation Chief.  Nanoose Chief Howie Edwards will attend as a guest.

Wednesday, Oct. 19 Outing Nanoose Bird Walk at the Nanoose Bay Estuary

Leaders: Lois and John MacKenzie (468-7329).  Meet at the parking lot by the water next to the Pentecostal Church Camp.  (Take first left turn off the No. 19 Hwy after the intersection at the Petro Station going towards Nanaimo; drive all the way to the end of the road.)  Start of the walk at 8:30 a.m.

Sunday, Oct. 23 Outing Courtenay Municipal Airport

Leaders: Helen and Hans Laue (468-1786). Easy.  Observe the water and land birds and Sunday strollers along this pleasant public space along the river behind the airport.  Some participants may want to go for lunch at a Courtenay restaurant after the walk.  Leave at Nanoose Place at 9:30 a.m.

With lunch at a Courtenay restaurant, return to Nanoose Place will be by 2:00 pm, without lunch by 1:00 pm.

Wednesday, Nov. 2 Outing Nanoose Bird Walk at Craig Bay, Madrona Point, and Wall Beach

Leader:  Hans Laue (468-1786).  Meet at Nanoose Place for car pooling.  We'll leave at 9:00 am.

Friday, Nov. 04 Outing Stamp Falls Provincial Park, Port Alberni

Leaders: Bruce and Carol Carle (468-2350).  Easy to moderate. Observe the salmon, waterfalls, fall birds, and wildflowers.  Leave at Nanoose Place at 9:30 a.m. 

Car travel is estimated at 1.5 h each way, and the time spent walking and observing in Stamp Falls Provincial Park at 2 h.  Return time at Nanoose Place is estimated at 2:30 pm for those wishing to return immediately, and at 3:30 pm for those wishing to go to a pub close to the Park.

Thursday, Nov. 24 Outing Little Qualicum River Estuary

Leaders:  Joe Crichton (468-1728).  Easy to moderate.  Walk along a pebbly beach to observe the sea life. Leave at Nanoose Place at 9:30 a.m.  Return to Nanoose Place by 12:30 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 15 Meeting Nanoose Naturalists' Christmas Pot Luck
The regular monthly meeting in December is replaced by a potluck dinner in the Nanoose Library starting at 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 17 Outing Unofficial Christmas Bird Count in Nanoose

Groups of four or more will be observing in the field from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.  Feeder watchers will observe at their homes for a total of at least one hour during this time period.  All observers will meet at 12:45 pm at the Laughing Gull Pub to combine the data over lunch.
